Volunteer: Volunteers for Friendly Visits to Seniors and Adults with Disabilities

Friendly visiting seeks to alleviate social isolation and depression that often accompanies the physical and emotional challenges facing older adults and adults with disabilities who are homebound.  Researchers spotted 20 years ago that social isolation is not just bad for a person, but can actually shorten their life span. Since then, there’s been a steady stream of research pointing in the same direction. Yet loneliness is not treated as a serious health risk. “One visit per week from a Volunteer Caregiver can prevent an elderly person from having to move out of their home.”  CB, Social Worker, Rex Home Health Services

Zip Codes with the most need are 27604, 27609, and 27610. Opportunties all over Wake County.

Volunteer: Volunteers needed to help a family caregiver

The Center’s Caregiver Support Program provides respite or “time off” for primary caregivers who often dedicate all of their energy to meeting the needs of a loved one while ignoring their own which can jeopardize their own physical and emotional health. Volunteers provide in-home respite care for family caregivers of adults with Alzheimers, dementia, or other illnesses which prevent caregivers from leaving home for any period of time.  A respite volunteer allows family caregivers to get the care they need to stay healthy both physically and emotionally. Volunteers may choose to receive specialized training in addition to the general orientation in order to better serve this population.

In 2016 volunteers provided 2149 hours of caregiver support. 89% of Caregivers surveyed felt less stress over caring for their relative and trying to meet other responsibilities for family or work because of receiving Respite Services from The Center.

There are opportunities throughout Wake County.

Volunteer: PNC Arena Partnership - Exciting! Fun!

We are in a Partnership with PNC Arena in Raleigh to manage a stand 10-20 times during a season. We need volunteers who can offer to help out for at least 3 games during the season. The camaraderie is great and you get to meet other people who care about kids and teens who are grieving.

The Shore is compensated for sales of food and beverages (including beer). We earn a commission on top of a guarantee. This is an important fundraiser for us and need more volunteers so we have the required number of volunteers for a stand.

Please contact Carolyn if you can help us for this important partnership. carolyn@theshoregriefcenter.org or text 919-368-6286.

Age - must be 18.

Uniform - black pants (not jeans or leggings), long sleeve black polo type shirt (or short sleeve with black long sleeve underneath), all black shoes. We provide a Shore logo's hat and apron.

Thanks!

Volunteer: Christmas Angel Tree Registration Volunteers Needed

From September 18-22, The Salvation Army of Durham will be registering qualifying families in our community for our Christmas assistance program (Angel Tree!). We registered over 600 families last year, and we could not have done that without volunteer support. As a volunteer for registration, you will help by assuring that each family is qualified for our program. You will then record the gifts their children would like for Christmas in our system. It is a fun-filled, exciting week here at our Corps!

We have a volunteer orientation on Saturday, September 9, from 9:00-10:30.

Volunteer: Be a Kettle Ringer!

The Salvation Army is known for our famous Red Kettle Bell Ringers throughout the Christmas season. They ring bells at locations all around the community as participants in our largest fund-raising effort of the year. While this fund-raiser happens only during November and December, the money raised goes directly toward keeping our programs running year-round. Programs like our Food Pantry, that feeds the hungry in our community; our Boys & Girls Club, that keeps your children safe in the afternoons and summer months; Pathway of Hope, that works to break the cycle of poverty in families in Durham. Join us as we work to Do The Most Good in Durham by ringing a red kettle with your family or organization.

If you are interested in this opportunity, I will send you a form to fill out, where you can choose your location, day, etc.
