Who We Are

The Y is the nation’s leading nonprofit committed to strengthening communities. For more than 150 years, the YMCA of the Triangle has nurtured and fortified the Triangle community through programs for healthy living, youth development and social responsibility. The Y connects people of all ages and backgrounds to bridge the gaps in community needs. Every day, we work side-by-side with our neighbors to make sure that everyone, regardless of age, income or background, has the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive. We are dedicated to building healthy, confident, connected and secure children, adults and families.

What We Do

YMCA’s Community Hope Mentoring Program

Community Hope isn’t just a tutoring program. It’s a relationship – a bond between mentor and child.

Community Hope is a mentor/literacy program with the Alexander Family YMCA that addresses the individual learning needs of students living in affordable housing communities here in Raleigh.

As a mentor, you will meet with your student once a week, on a set day and time, throughout the school year. Mentoring sessions are offered Monday through Thursday at 4:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. During these one-hour sessions, you and your mentee will have the opportunity to build a relationship while working through an individualized literacy plan. We pair each student with two adult advocates or mentors who strongly support the student for an entire school year, and often longer.

The mentors will engage the student academically, but will also be challenged to go beyond academics to address the student in a holistic manner. This may mean addressing matters of character, the needs or dreams of the student or any other matter of concern to the individual child. Our hope is that through these relationships the student, as well as the mentor and parent, will grow in holistic ways. As we aid in the growth of each student, we will build and secure the health of our entire community. On average, more than 300 mentors volunteer yearly.

With your help, a child will develop confidence and an expanded vision for their future!
